Forget Instant Replay in the NFL: LASIK the Refs!

Edward Hochuli, one of the most respected referees in the NFL, blew a call last week that cost the Chargers the game. 

In an interview, he discussed that he couldn't decide if he should wear his glasses or contact lenses because of the wind.  I have a better solution, LASIK.  Below is an open letter that I have sent to Mr. Hochuli:

Dear Mr. Hochuli:

 

You’re probably sick and tired of hearing fans complaining about referees like you making bad calls against our favorite teams on Sundays. And I’m sure you’ve heard from many angry Chargers fans this week after your admittedly wrong call last weekend.

 

We all know that instant replay is not always going to correct all bad calls.  I feel strongly that we should minimize the chance of referee errors in the first place. Correcting a referee’s vision is certainly a step in the right direction.

 

During an interview Monday night, when the discussion turned to how the wind affected you contact lenses, I found it interesting that you jokingly mentioned LASIK, and “find me a doctor.”   … Well, this football fan is putting his money where his mouth is:  I’m offering you a free eye examination, prescription lenses, LASIK eye surgery-whatever eye care services it takes - to ensure that my favorite team, the Green Bay Packers, has a fair shot at the Super Bowl this season.

 

Why not consider LASIK? If there’s any segment of the population who can benefit from LASIK, its referees and umpires. Let’s let the players determine the outcome of the game!
